From Curiosity to Confidence: Hamish’s Software Engineering Journey at Heriot-Watt University
Studying Software Engineering at Heriot-Watt University has helped fourth-year student Hamish Marshall Dawson turn his childhood curiosity about technology into a growing sense of confidence and purpose.
In his student interview, Hamish shares what first inspired his interest in computing, why he chose Heriot-Watt University and how the university’s supportive community has shaped his academic journey and future ambitions.
A Childhood Curiosity About Technology
Hamish’s interest in computing began long before he entered university. Growing up in a remote part of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he remembers watching his mother speak to relatives in England over the phone.
The ability to communicate instantly with people living far away fascinated him.
Although he did not understand how the technology worked at the time, he wanted to discover what made such communication possible. This early curiosity eventually encouraged him to pursue computing science and software engineering.
Why Hamish Chose Heriot-Watt University
Several factors influenced Hamish’s decision to study at Heriot-Watt University. One of the most important was the campus itself. He was particularly impressed by its location and atmosphere.
The people, opportunities and overall university culture also played an important role in his decision. Hamish describes Heriot-Watt as a university where teamwork is an important part of the student experience.
This collaborative environment helped him develop close friendships and establish a strong sense of belonging.
Building Confidence Through Teaching and Support
For Hamish, university has been about more than developing technical knowledge. He explains that his lecturers have played an important role in building his confidence. Their enthusiasm for their subjects and the confidence with which they share their knowledge encouraged him to believe more strongly in his own abilities.
As a result, Hamish became more willing to challenge himself and pursue personal projects. His experience demonstrates how supportive teaching can help students develop both academically and personally.
Making International Friendships
Another highlight of Hamish’s experience has been the university’s international community. Through Heriot-Watt’s global opportunities, he has met students from places including Dubai and Malaysia.
These connections have introduced him to people he believes he might not otherwise have met.
Hamish is particularly grateful for the friendships he has developed and the sense of community he experiences at the university.
For him, these relationships are an important part of what makes studying at Heriot-Watt meaningful.
Looking Ahead: Using Technology to Make a Difference
Although Hamish has not yet decided on a specific career path, he has a clear idea of what he hopes to achieve. He wants to use the skills he has gained through computing science and software engineering to contribute positively to society.
Giving something back to the community that raised him is particularly important to him.
Rather than focusing solely on financial success, Hamish hopes to develop something meaningful that can benefit others. His experience at Heriot-Watt University has given him both the technical foundation and the confidence to work towards that ambition.
