What is the IB Curriculum?
The IB curriculum is an internationally recognized educational program designed to develop students’ intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills.
The IB curriculum is offered at three levels: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP). Each level corresponds to specific age groups and educational stages.
Primary Years Programme (PYP):
- Age Group: Students aged 3 to 12.
- Focus: The PYP aims to foster inquiry-based learning, curiosity, and a love of learning. It emphasizes the development of essential skills, knowledge, concepts, attitudes, and actions.
- Subjects: The PYP curriculum covers a broad range of subjects including language (often taught in multiple languages), mathematics, science, social studies, arts, physical education, and personal, social and physical education (PSPE).
- Transdisciplinary Learning: The PYP encourages students to make connections across disciplines through transdisciplinary themes, helping them to understand real-world issues and develop a holistic perspective.
Middle Years Programme (MYP):
- Age Group: Typically for students aged 11–16.
- Focus: The MYP aims to develop critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and a global perspective. It emphasizes inquiry-based learning and encourages students to make connections between subjects and real-life contexts.
- Subjects: The MYP curriculum includes language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design.
- Interdisciplinary Learning: The MYP promotes interdisciplinary learning, where students explore connections between different subjects through global contexts.
Diploma Programme (DP):
- Age Group: Students aged 16–19.
- Focus: The DP is a two-year program designed to provide a well-rounded education while encouraging students to specialize in particular subjects. It emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, and academic writing.
- Subjects: The DP curriculum consists of six subject groups: studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Students also complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, the Extended Essay (EE), and the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements.
- Flexibility: The DP allows students to choose higher-level (HL) and standard-level (SL) courses based on their interests and future academic or career aspirations.
The purpose of the IB curriculum is to promote international-mindedness, cultural understanding, and academic excellence. It encourages students to become active, compassionate, lifelong learners who are prepared to make a positive contribution to the world.
