Jacksonville State University students discuss their experiences of taking part in a study tour to Washington, D.C. In the video, students from different academic backgrounds explain how the trip allowed them to connect classroom learning with real places, meet new people, and become more independent.

Seeing Classroom Learning in Real Life

Before travelling, the students learned about the history, political system, and important locations they would visit. They explain that this preparation helped them understand the city and its institutions when they arrived. During the tour, students visited the White House, Congress, and other historic places they had previously seen only in textbooks. One participant explains that learning about the House and the Senate in class made visiting these institutions more meaningful.

An Experience for Students from Different Majors

The video features students studying biology, chemistry, political science, pre-law, English, drama, and education. Their experiences show that the study tour was relevant not only to political science students but also to participants from many different academic disciplines.

One biology student explains that Washington remains relevant to scientific fields because it is the capital of the country.

Building New Friendships

Several students say that they knew very few members of the group before joining the tour. During the trip, however, they became close friends and continued communicating after returning to the university. Some participants explain that they still have a group chat and support each other with university projects and assignments.

Professional Meetings and a Career Opportunity

During the study tour, students had the opportunity to meet Congressman Mike Rogers and visit his office. Some participants also attended a group interview with representatives of the White House Fellowship programme. One student explains that she first met Congressman Mike Rogers during the tour. She was later hired to work for him in a full-time position.

Becoming More Independent and Confident

Students also describe how navigating an unfamiliar city, using the metro system, and adapting to new situations strengthened their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. One participant says that the tour helped her move outside her comfort zone and become more independent, open-minded, and resourceful. Others explain that the experience taught them to think quickly and become more confident in themselves.
