Studying Physics at the University of Leicester: An International Student Experience
An international Physics student at the University of Leicester has shared her experience of choosing the university, studying Physics and making the most of student life. With an interest in the fundamental mysteries of the universe and a mathematical mindset from childhood, she chose Physics as a subject that matched her natural curiosity.
Why Study Physics?
Her interest in Physics began with a fascination for patterns, equations and the way the universe works. Having enjoyed mathematical thinking from an early age, studying Physics became a natural choice.
The subject gave her an opportunity to explore the questions and ideas that had interested her since childhood.
Why Did She Choose the University of Leicester?
The student highlighted three main reasons for choosing Leicester. The first was the city’s connection with space, including the National Space Centre and Space Park.
She was also attracted by:
• The diverse and welcoming community
• Different cultures and events across the city
• The lively environment
• A College of Science and Engineering scholarship
The scholarship provided valuable financial support that helped her continue her degree as an international student.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
A typical day as a Physics student can combine lectures, workshops and practical learning. The morning may begin with several lectures, followed by workshops in the afternoon.
During workshops, students can work alongside their friends while professors are available to answer questions and provide support.
Putting Physics into Practice
Laboratory sessions allow students to apply the theoretical knowledge they learn during lectures. The student described working hands-on with advanced instruments while demonstrators were available to provide assistance.
This practical element gave her an opportunity to experience Physics beyond equations and classroom theory.
Student Life Beyond Physics
Joining societies and events helped her make more of her university experience. Through these activities, she met many people who shared similar interests and passions.
In the evenings, she might spend time studying and completing assignments or meet friends and head into the city centre for a coffee.
Memorable Achievements at Leicester
Her time at Leicester also included several memorable achievements. She said she was proud to graduate as part of the 100th cohort of the University’s School of Physics.
One particularly memorable experience was meeting Dr Nicola Fox, NASA’s Head of Science, and even getting a selfie with her. During her studies, she also received three awards. These included prizes recognising her academic performance during her second and third years, as well as the Placement Student of the Year Award for her industry year.
For her, these awards reflected the effort she had put into her degree and the way she had developed throughout the programme.
Studying Physics at the University of Leicester combined academic learning, practical experience and personal development for this international student. From lectures and laboratory work to societies, friendships and personal achievements, she described the programme as an experience that helped her grow both academically and as an individual.
