Iqra, a fourth-year Economics student at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, moved to the UK from Italy to pursue her studies. She shares her experience of studying economics, completing an industry placement, and making the most of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

Why Did Iqra Choose Economics?

Iqra’s interest in economics developed while growing up in different countries. She became curious about why countries adopt different economic policies and why some economies perform better than others.

She chose Nottingham Business School because of the course’s emphasis on real-world economic problems and practical learning.

Her studies have provided opportunities to apply economic theories to real-life models and develop technical skills, including using the Bloomberg Lab to work with financial market data.

Gaining Experience in the Energy Sector

As part of her degree, Iqra completed a year-long industry placement, working as a Support Analyst in the energy sector. Her responsibilities included monitoring payment settlements, ensuring payments were completed on time, and following up with relevant parties when delays occurred.

The placement gave her an opportunity to experience a professional working environment and apply skills developed during her studies.

Iqra highlights the range of academic support available to students at Nottingham Business School. During their first year, students are assigned a student mentor, while academic mentoring is available in later years. Students can also access library support and arrange one-to-one meetings with tutors.

One of Iqra’s favourite places at Nottingham Business School is the Link Lounge, which she describes as a useful space for group projects and meeting other students between classes.

Iqra encourages future students to become involved in activities both within and beyond their degree programmes.

Throughout university, she has participated in competitions and gained experience speaking on stage. These opportunities have helped her become more confident and develop new skills.

She explains that she was not always as confident as she is today, but getting involved in different activities helped her discover that she enjoys taking on new challenges.

Her advice is to try unfamiliar opportunities, even when they do not directly relate to a chosen career path, because students cannot always predict where those experiences might lead.
