Can You Start University Later After Receiving an Offer?
In some cases, students may be able to start university later than originally planned. This is known as deferred entry. For example, a student may want to begin the following academic year instead of starting university this year.
What Is Deferred Entry?
Deferred entry means moving your university start date to a later intake. It can give some students additional time before beginning their degree. However, deferred entry is not available for every university or programme.
Why Might Students Choose to Start Later?
Students may want to delay university for many different reasons. Personal plans can change, additional preparation may be needed, or starting at a later date may simply become more suitable.
Whatever the reason, it is important to speak to the university before making your decision.
Is Deferred Entry Available for Every Course?
Not every programme allows students to defer their entry. Some universities may allow you to move your start date, while others may require you to apply again for the next intake.
Rules can also vary between courses. You should not assume that your current offer will automatically remain available for the following year.
What Should You Ask the University?
Check all the conditions with your university before changing your start date. Asking the right questions can help you understand exactly what will happen to your offer.
You may want to ask:
• Can I defer my entry?
• Do I need to submit a separate request?
• Will my current offer remain valid?
• Will the programme be available next year?
• Will this affect any scholarship or funding?
• Will I need to provide new documents?
When Should You Contact the University?
It is usually better to ask about deferred entry as early as possible. Waiting too long may reduce the options available to you.
If your plans have changed, contact the university’s admissions team and ask what options are available.
Starting university later may be possible, but the rules depend on the university and programme. Before making a decision, check how deferring could affect your offer and what steps you need to complete.
