University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) was founded in 1972 and is part of the University of Massachusetts system, one of the largest university systems in the United States. As Boston's only public research university, UMass Boston is located on the Columbia Point peninsula on the city’s south shore. It is a public research university, and the Massachusetts campus is the third-largest among the system’s five campuses. UMass Boston is the only public university in Boston.

The university is accredited by the New England Higher Education Commission (NECHE), with its accreditation renewed in 2015. UMass Boston is also accredited by AACSB International, which confirms the high quality of its business programs.
